Re-Elect Democrat Larry Bragman to the Marin Water Board
A MESSAGE FROM LARRY
Dear Friends,
Eight years ago your support helped me earn the Division 3 seat on the Marin Water Board of Directors. I'd like to continue working for you as I seek re-election on November 8th. This year I have a well funded opponent who has already launched a campaign. That is why your support now with an endorsement or offer of help is crucial.
Climate change is severely impacting the entire state of California including Marin's unique Mt. Tam watershed. In spite of these challenging conditions, Marin residents understood the district's drought plan and achieved a remarkable peak monthly water reduction of 40%. And while winter rains replenished our local reservoirs, the Board of Directors has continued to expand our water supply portfolio in a comprehensive and cost-effective manner.
In January we completed the renovation of the Kastania Pump Station which has enhanced our operational flexibility to accommodate an additional 5,000 acre feet from Sonoma—for reference that's slightly more than what Bon Tempe reservoir holds! Through our Las Gallinas Sanitary District partnership, we recently completed reconstruction and expansion of a state-of-the-art recycled water plant which effectively quadruples production capacity for landscapes, gardens and other non-potable uses in our north San Rafael "purple pipe" district.
In addition to our drought response I helped implement other important district changes:
Vastly expanding fire fuel reduction efforts
Televising our meetings for greater public access and transparency
Prohibiting the use of toxic herbicides in our watershed
Adding gray water, turf replacement and other water efficiency incentives to our conservation efforts
Supporting critical habitat restoration projects for endangered coho and steelhead
Eliminating connection fees for existing MMWD customers who build in-law units
Adding a key new multi-use connector trail to Azalea Hill
Other promising projects include our plans underway to use Phoenix Lake as both a flood control and water supply asset. We are also in discussions with other North Bay water districts to develop shared ground water storage projects to boost drought resilience. Installation of spillway gates at Marin Water's dam sites may provide additional local storage during wet years and allow releases for downstream flows when needed.
Water is a human right that is increasingly threatened by climate change. While the rich beauty of our lands has come to define the quality of life in Marin, the protection and preservation of the Mt. Tam watershed remains the central pillar of our water security.
Marin Water is now in a critical stage of enacting even more innovative changes and all options remain on the table. Continuity of leadership is critical in order to move forward with the agility needed in these times. While I greatly appreciate your past support, I hope you'll take a moment to reply here and endorse my re-election for Division 3 Director.
Sincerely,
Larry Bragman
Marin Water Board, Division 3 Director
